It’s hard to say if anyone didn’t expect this moment to arrive, but now it’s here and the decision is no less difficult. With new evidence that Syria used chemical weapons against its own people on August 21st, killing approximately 1,400 civilians, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are now seeking approval for an American-led strike on Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
In an increasingly war-weary climate, President Obama recently punted the decision to Congress, asking for a vote. This week, in our second edition of Urchins Take Sides, we ask ourselves (and you) whether or not the United States should intervene in the humanitarian crisis in Syria. Is it our place? Will we simply stir up further anti-American sentiment? Could this be a reenactment of the Soviet war in Afghanistan? Does any of that matter when thousands of innocent people are killed in such a horrific fashion? We’ll discuss this week.
